    Joseph F. Harbison III

    Mr. Harbison acts as "of counsel" with the Ellis Coleman firm on selected cases. In his role as "of counsel" to Ellis Coleman, Mr. Harbison acts as an independent contractor, and not as an owner, partner or employee.

    Practice Focus

    Mr. Harbison is an accomplished trial and appellate advocate. For almost three decades, he has practiced at every level of the state and federal courts. Mr. Harbison represents plaintiffs in serious personal injury cases including cases involving medical and dental malpractice, discrimination, elder abuse, wrongful death, and products liability. He has also litigated real estate, property damage and complex business disputes.

    Professional History

    Mr. Harbison has tried more than 100 civil and criminal jury cases and has achieved numerous 6- and 7-figure verdicts and settlements for his plaintiff clients. He has appeared numerous times before the California Courts of Appeal and the United States Courts of Appeal, including before the Ninth Circuit. He argued U.S. v. Rylander, 460 U.S. 752 (1983) before the United States Supreme Court.

    Mr. Harbison is rated "AV" in Martindale Hubbel. In 1997, he was certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Harbison has been named a Northern California "Super Lawyer". He was named "Advocate of the Year" in 1994 by Capitol Trial Lawyers Association (CCTLA).

    Mr. Harbison has served as a judge pro tem for the Sacramento County Superior Court, and as an arbitrator for the Superior Courts for the Counties of Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado.

    Mr. Harbison has acted as an adjunct professor, teaching trial advocacy, at the University of San Francisco School of Law, and he has likewise taught courses on behalf of Continuing Education of the Bar, Consumer Attorneys of California, the Practicing Law Institute and DRI.

    Mr. Harbison received his bachelor's degree from Villanova University in 1971. He graduated with honors from McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, in 1978.

    At McGeorge School of Law, Mr. Harbison was a member of the Dean's Honors List and the recipient of several American Jurisprudence Awards.
